The names behind our mission

The Legacy of Barbara & Bennie

A life of service. A legacy of compassion.

A legacy of faith, family, service, and compassion.

The Barbara & Bennie Foundation For Children was established in honor of Barbara and Bennie McCain, whose lives and example embody service, faith, generosity, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others.

Barbara and Bennie grew up in the small East Texas town of Pineland, Texas, and were married in 1957. Together, they built a life centered on family and service to others—a commitment that carried them throughout their lives and around the world.

A life of service, generosity, and compassion.

Bennie devoted 30 years to a distinguished career in the United States Army, serving at duty stations around the world and completing a tour of duty in Vietnam.

His ability to connect with people was one of his greatest gifts. There seemed to be no one Bennie couldn't communicate with, regardless of where they came from or their circumstances.

Some of his most meaningful acts of service, however, took place quietly and without recognition.

When Bennie saw someone struggling, he helped. That might have meant providing food or clothing, helping someone secure housing, paying a bill, or simply stepping in when a person or family needed assistance the most. He didn't help others for attention or praise. He did it because he believed it was the right thing to do.

Bennie passed away on December 6, 2011, but the example he set continues to influence our family and the mission of the Foundation that proudly bears his name.

A continuing legacy of faith, compassion, and service.

Barbara devoted her professional life to civilian public service while maintaining a deep commitment to her faith and church community.

She has long been an active member of her church and, following her retirement from civilian service, continued her service to others as a religious activities manager at her local hospital.

Her compassion has always extended far beyond a job title. Barbara understands the importance of being present for people during difficult moments and offering encouragement, faith, kindness, and practical support when they need it most.

Today, Barbara continues to represent the compassion, faith, and spirit of service upon which this Foundation was built. Her life remains a living example of what it means to care for others with humility and genuine empathy.

Their Legacy

A personal reflection of the love, family, and opportunity at the heart of their legacy.

Barbara and Bennie shared something that became a defining characteristic of their life together: they saw a need and responded to it.

They approached generosity with selflessness and genuine empathy. Their purpose was never simply to provide temporary assistance. Whenever possible, they wanted their help to change the course of someone's life for the better during their time of greatest need.

For me, that generosity is deeply personal.

One of the greatest single acts of their generosity was their adoption of me.

They didn't simply give me a home. They gave me a family, opportunity, guidance, love, and a foundation upon which I could build my own life. Through their decision to open their hearts and their home to me, I experienced firsthand the life-changing difference that compassion and selfless action can make in the life of a child.

Their example taught me that changing a child's life doesn't always begin with something extraordinary. Sometimes it begins when someone sees a need, chooses to care, and is willing to act.

That lesson is at the very heart of The Barbara & Bennie Foundation For Children.

The Foundation was created not simply to preserve their names, but to continue what they demonstrated throughout their life together: that one act of generosity, given at the right moment, can change the course of a person's life forever.

Today, we seek to extend that same spirit of compassion to other children by supporting opportunities for education, stability, care, essential needs, and hope.

That mission reaches from communities here in the United States to children abroad, including our support of the Danny Feeney Orphanage in Monrovia, Liberia.

Their Names. Their Legacy. Our Mission.

Bennie never sought recognition for helping someone, and Barbara continues to approach service with that same humility.

For them, the reward was never recognition. It was knowing that a person who was struggling might have a better tomorrow because someone cared enough to help today.

I am living proof of what that kind of generosity can accomplish.

My father's life and my mother's continuing example remind me that a legacy isn't measured simply by what we leave behind. It is measured by what we place in others and what they, in turn, choose to pass forward.

The Foundation that bears their names seeks to do exactly that—recognizing needs, responding with compassion, and creating opportunities capable of changing lives.

Their example teaches us that generosity is more than giving.
It is seeing another person's need, understanding it, and choosing to act.

That is the legacy of Barbara and Bennie McCain.

And through The Barbara & Bennie Foundation For Children, it is a legacy we are honored to carry forward for the next child whose life might be changed by someone choosing to care.

Executive Director

Salome NaNa Gbaryou

Born in Grand Bassa County in 1964, Salome NaNa Gbaryou was educated in District #3, Buchanan City, and later attended the University of Liberia before the Liberian Civil War interrupted her studies. Years of conflict forced her to relocate several times within Liberia and to Sierra Leone.

During the war years, Salome began establishing a school and saw firsthand how many children—especially those who had lost their parents—could not afford basic school supplies or consistent care. That experience expanded her educational mission into a broader vision for vulnerable children. In 2004, the dream of an orphanage was born: a safe place where children without parental care could receive education, shelter, food, discipline, guidance, and hope for the future. Her vision continues through the institution’s commitment to helping children learn, grow, and build better lives.
